Plan Your Mountain Golf Trip
Four championship courses, endless views, one perfect basecamp
There's nothing quite like mountain golf. The ball flies farther at altitude, the air is crisp even in July, and every hole comes with views that would be a destination anywhere else.
Grand County, Colorado has quietly become one of the best mountain golf destinations in the West. Within 40 minutes of Chateau Relaxo, you have four distinct courses—from the championship test of Pole Creek to the sweeping Craig Stadler design at Grand Elk.
This guide breaks down each course, suggests multi-day itineraries, and shares the tips we've learned hosting golf groups over the years.
The Courses
Four unique mountain courses, each worth playing. Here's what makes each one special.
Golf at Altitude: What to Expect
Playing at 8,500+ feet changes the game in ways that take some adjustment—mostly in your favor.
Ball Flight
Expect 10-15% more distance on every club
Club down accordingly
Break
Putts break less than you think at altitude
Play less break on reads
Hydration
You'll dehydrate faster than at sea level
Drink twice what you normally would
Sun
UV is stronger at altitude—wear sunscreen
You'll burn faster even on cool days
Tip: Take an extra club on uphill shots—the thin air doesn't help as much going up.

Frequently Asked Questions
When is the best time for a Colorado mountain golf trip?
June through September offers ideal conditions. Late June through July has the longest days. August brings occasional afternoon thunderstorms but great morning golf. September offers stunning fall colors.
How much farther does the ball really fly at altitude?
At 8,500-9,000 feet, expect 10-15% more carry distance. A 150-yard club at sea level plays more like 165-170 here. Adjust club selection accordingly.
Which course is best for a group with mixed skill levels?
Granby Ranch is most forgiving with wider fairways. Pole Creek's Meadow 9 is also fairly gentle. Grand Elk has generous fairways but more trouble if you miss.
How do I book tee times at Pole Creek?
Book directly through their website or call the pro shop. Peak times (weekend mornings) book up 1-2 weeks out in summer. Ask about staying at Chateau Relaxo—we're right on the course.
Where should I stay for a golf trip?
Chateau Relaxo is literally on the 1st fairway of Pole Creek and central to all four courses. Sleeps 14 for groups, with hot tub for post-round recovery and a full kitchen for group dinners.
